This beautiful rustic ranch home is nestled back into a picturesque wooded farm setting just outside of Fairmont, MN. Privacy and nature are found in abundance here at the rustic ranch. Spectacular wildlife views can be had looking out the huge picture windows that spans the entire back of the home. This energetic family of five saw the beauty of the property and the potential of the home seven years ago when they settled in.
Fast forward a few years to 2019 when the family decided to take on a whole house renovation, including a spectacular kitchen makeover by yours truly! I’m so excited to share some of the behind-the-scenes highlights of this amazing transformation.
Diving head-first into a major renovation takes planning and research. I started working on floor plan designs with the family months ago. These plans included removing a wall that separated the kitchen and dining room, downsizing the fireplace to create larger living and dining room spaces and reconfiguring the back entry to include a large pantry and locker space. We completely opened up the main floor and provided much-needed storage solutions for this busy family of five!
The Kitchen Cabinetry:
Both homeowners agreed that having traditional white cabinetry that housed upgraded appliances was very important as well as having some unexpected elements that personalize the space. Simple shaker doors in white painted maple gives the kitchen a classic, timeless feel. Accenting the kitchen with rustic patina hickory for the statement island and accessory pieces gave it the personality the homeowners were looking for. The rustic patina hickory adds warmth and texture to the cabinetry and gives it that rustic element that makes it feel as if it’s been there for years. Adding white marble subway tile applied all the way to the ceiling adds timeless appeal while the use of a pattern tile under the hood gives it a “POP” of farmhouse flare and provides a spectacular focal point!
Island & Countertops:
The Island is definitely one of the highlights of this kitchen makeover. We selected warm patina hickory with visible knots and natural movement in the graining which creates a beautiful focal point for this kitchen. Not only beautiful, this island is highly functional with the sink, dishwasher and garbage/recycling center built in. We also added additional oversized drawers on one end of the island to make dishes and flatware more easily accessible and a row of cabinets across the front that provide additional storage for kitchen overflow. This island also provides the perfect gathering spot for family meals or entertaining friends!
We used gorgeous Cambria countertops to top this stunning cabinetry. Wanting to give the countertops timeless appeal we kept the designs simple. Using Dovedale on the island and Blackwood on the perimeter allowed us to add interest with contrasting colors.
Hood, Beverage Center, Storage Solutions & Flooring:
The hood was another important design feature for this kitchen. We used white painted maple for this piece and accented it with gorgeous patina hickory trim. We also incorporated two new windows, one for each side of the hood, to create dimensional interest and highlight the hood. The pattern tile used below the hood adds a “POP” of whimsical farm-styling to the design.
The beverage center is a versatile area that provides a designated location for cold beverages, coffee, wine and all of the coordinating glassware. The patina hickory stemware rack adds some interest to this space and allow the homeowners to showcase their beautiful wine glasses. This unique bar includes a large screen television perfect for entertainment.
There are storage solutions GALORE in this customized kitchen. We incorporated oversized drawers to store pots and pans under the cooktop, spice roll-outs, a customized cabinet with a pop-up mixer stand to house a large freestanding mixer, vertical dividers for cookie sheets and tall items, cutlery dividers, plate organizers and oversized drawer bases throughout.
We removed the burgundy carpet and replaced the entire main floor with solid maple wood planks. Light colored floors are definitely on the rise. After years of dark stains, homeowners are realizing that lighter shades are easier to maintain. They have less fading, show less dust and dirt and the distressing on this particular floor hides dings and scratches. However, as with any natural wood products, over time wood floors will show dings and scratches which I think adds to the character and beauty of the natural floor.
